Cyberattacks: Navigating a Treacherous Internet

July 12, 2017 by William Thompson Leave a Comment

Cyberattacks: Navigating a Treacherous InternetCyberattacks are an increasing threat throughout the world as we become more and more dependent on technology. Recent attacks have wreaked havoc on individuals, companies, and whole countries. Criminals hack into computer systems and jeopardize national healthcare services, banks, energy companies, and airlines. The attacks are expanding in both breadth and scope. The major hacks will flood a news cycle, even this blog will review a couple of them. However, the small-scale attacks garner considerably less coverage.

Small Companies at risk

Thousands of small businesses are targeted by cyberattacks every day: according to the 2016 State of SMB Cybersecurity Report, half of all small businesses in the U.S. have been hacked in the last 12 months. To date, our website has prevented over 12,500 malicious login attempts.

So far we’ve been lucky. *knocks on wood*

The US National Cyber Security Alliance detailed that roughly 60% businesses that succumb to a cyberattack will be “out-of-business within a year”! And that’s not all: a study by Verizon claims that the internet is experiencing a 50% increase in ransomware being spread around online. There is a good reason ransomware has increased in popularity: it works!

Take a hospital in California as an example: it fell victim to a ransomware attack and ended up paying nearly $17,000 in bitcoin to unlock their systems. The internet is becoming a more dangerous and volatile place, but malicious software can’t take all the credit. The responsibility to keep a business safe still falls on the shoulders of its owner(s). The proper precautions must be taken to ensure the privacy, security, and integrity of a business’s online infrastructure.

You wouldn’t lay out sensitive information on the street for anyone to discover, would you? Don’t do it on the internet, then.

Content Marketing: Tips and Applications for 2017

July 6, 2017 by William Thompson Leave a Comment

What is Content Marketing?

Content marketing is defined by Google as “a type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services”. Since the dawn of internet marketing, people have stood by the statement “Content is King”, which roughly translates to providing consumers with original, organic, and authoritative content that drives traffic online. Sites like Buzzfeed, Reddit, and Tumblr excel in producing content to drive traffic. In addition to that, 70% of B2B marketers will incorporate more content into their marketing strategies during 2017. E-commerce websites that utilize content marketing see 3x more leads and 6x more conversion rates compared to sites with no content strategy.

We think content marketing is important to a comprehensive digital strategy, but not everyone shares this belief. These people declined to dedicate the resources necessary to improve their content online because they don’t think it’s an important enough strategy to invest time and money in.

Influencer Marketing: Old Dog, New Tricks.

June 28, 2017 by William Thompson 1 Comment

Influencer Marketing has erupted in the wake of social networks. Is this wave simply a new trend or a bonafide marketing strategy? Ehh, it’s too new to call. However, we will provide helpful strategies and tips to increase your brand’s “influence”.

Disclaimer- influencer marketing is not a new concept: Helene covered some basics of Influencer Marketing on #MarketingMonday. In short, Influencer Marketing is when brands partner with social media and internet personalities to increase reach and credibility.

Today, consumers have tremendous ability to control their entertainment. The internet has allowed its users to siphon out unwanted content in their everyday life. For 47% of online users, that unwanted content is advertisements. This recent influx of adblocker software has advertisers scrambling for a solution around this problem.

4 Ways A Digital Marketing Agency Can Make Life Easier

June 21, 2017 by William Thompson Leave a Comment

Digital marketing agencies are trained in the many techniques to bypass the digital barriers separating a business from its customer. An agency is commonly a third-party entity comprised of two or more persons with a professional knowledge of various digital: landscapes, technologies, mediums, influencers, and algorithms. The combined knowledge of its members is what gives strength to an agency and to businesses seeking these services. The expansive and ever competitive world of internet marketing is no longer responsive to a part-time investment from do-it-yourself business owners, so hiring an agency would help these businesses grow faster and further.

How Hard Could It Be?

Marketing requires a considerable amount of time, resources, and understanding. It has never been something to half-ass. The same should be said for digital marketing, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case. A common misconception of digital marketing is its level of difficulty compared to traditional marketing. If someone can post to Facebook themselves, why would they pay someone else to do it? But of course, marketing is not that simple.

WeChat and the Potential of Apps

June 14, 2017 by William Thompson 2 Comments

Is WeChat the future of social networking apps? Many of you use apps in your daily lives; in fact, 90 billion were downloaded in 2016. Personally, I use Google Maps daily to check bus routes. In addition to apps, social media is consistently increasing in popularity: Instagram for the pictures; Snapchat for the creeping; Facebook for the fake news; and Pinterest for appreciating how untalented we are. Who wants to waste the precious 3 seconds it takes to bounce around to each one of these apps, though? Not me, but I just don’t know it yet.

As the technology behind these all-purpose apps increases, so will the general public’s desire to own one. Apps with a tremendous array of features are steadily growing in popularity within the US. One savvy company–in particular, Facebook–has caught wind of this trend. That shouldn’t be surprising. Facebook’s success can usually be attributed to showing up to the party early. The question is: is Facebook inviting us to party or stubbornly dragging us along?

3 Father’s Day Facebook Campaigns

June 5, 2017 by William Thompson Leave a Comment

Father’s Day, like most holidays, has awesome potential for social media campaigns: this time of the year is always a fun time to engage with your audience. Holidays provide unique opportunities to create memes, play with puns, get artistic, and share a story. Google Trends is already seeing an uptick in searches for the term “Father’s Day”. Let’s couple that with last year’s estimated $14.3 billion spent on Father’s Day gifts in 2016 alone. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to engage with your readily available audience through Facebook.

Extra Mile

The goal for your campaign can be anything you’d like: brand awareness, increase site traffic, promotions, or contests. First,  it’s important to have your other stuff in order before you launch your campaign. We advise you to get a head start in developing a solid digital marketing strategy/campaign, so here’s your homework:

The Net Neutrality Fiasco

May 31, 2017 by William Thompson 1 Comment

Let’s get the big question out of the way for anyone unfamiliar with the term “Net Neutrality”. The FCC defines Net Neutrality as the “ability to go where you want when you want online” and adds “Broadband service providers cannot block or deliberately slow speeds for internet services or apps, create special ‘fast lanes’ for content or engage in other practices that harm Internet openness”. In short, that is the official definition on Net Neutrality.  As of now, all website owners enjoy equal access to bandwidth entering their Internet Service Provider (ISP). Large ISPs consist of

Internet users enjoy equal access to the bandwidth entering their Internet Service Provider (ISP). Bandwidth controls the total amount of information that can be transferred through your internet connection. Bigger Bandwidth equals faster internet. As of now, the internet doesn’t selectively restrict bandwidth speeds for websites.  An article in CareerProfiles points out that “Internet service providers aren’t able to block content from competitors or delay the streaming speed of any site, in particular, meaning everything streams at relatively equal speeds”. However, telecom giants like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon want to change all that.

How Fake News Affects Digital Marketing

May 24, 2017 by William Thompson Leave a Comment

What is “fake news”?

Fake news: we’ve all heard about it and have probably (at some point) fell victim to it. Whether it oozes from TV, print, or social media, controversy sells. Fake news, although difficult to encapsulate, can be summed up as the purposeful spread of fake or sensationalized stories presented as fact. This isn’t a new phenomena (surprisingly!) but digital media has definitely added a new twist. Consequently, with its enormous commercial access, social media has taken the brunt of this criticism.

Fake news has been disseminated by special interests groups, backed through political or financial gains. Sensationalized stories garner massive amounts of attention and clicks, yielding amazing results in the short term. An article drenched in “alternative facts” can mislead audiences into a sharing frenzy, spreading that content throughout the web.
