Mira Joleigh (MJ): Tonight, we’ll be learning from Helene Kwong about how to double your following w/ hashtags! Tweet your questions to Helene!

Ambitionista: Q1 INTRODUCTIONS! For everyone to answer > Who are you? Where do you live? Tell us one quirky thing about you…

MJ: I’m Mira, your moderator – also a life coach based in Los Angeles. Quirk? I love to use parasols for shade and style!

Helene Kwong (HK):ย My name is Helene from Denver! One quirky thing about me is that I’m an aspiring polyglot ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ambitionista: Q2 For everyone > What is one success you’ve celebrated in the past 30 days? (big or small)

MJ: SUCCESS! I created an #Ambitionista leadership team for our FB group! Been doing TONS of Skype interviews to organize everyone. So fun!

HK: Gonna cheat & tell you TWO successes: 1) got a business coach! & 2) did my first BIG preso in front of 30+ women!

Ambitionista: Q3 FOR Helene TO ANSWER > For those who don’t know you yet, please tell us a little about yourself + your background

HK: Originally from Virginia, been on social media since 2005! Degree in Marketing. CEO & Founder of Hashtagitude ๐Ÿ™‚

MJ: Helene, I freaking LOVE the name of your business!

Ambitionista: Q4 Helene, Our topic tonight is about hashtags. For starters, can you explain the purpose + value of hashtags?

HK: Hashtags’ purpose are to make your tweets searchable + build community. More people see your tweets if you incllude the hashtag!

MJ: Q4 FOR EVERYONE > Ladies, are you confused about hashtags? What questions do you have for Helene?

Krystal Covington: Helene, how do people find out about your hashtag?

HK: Krystal, put the hashtag everywhere you can! Website, live events, etc.

Megan Brame: How many hashtags are too many? IG vs Twitter, Helene?

HK: On Twitter, at most 3 hashtags are good. IG, 11+ hashtags are great! Best to put IG hashtags in first comment esp. if cross-posting.

The Corporate Sister: How can we use hashtags to differentiate ourselves?

HK: You can create your own! Make it short and memorable.

Jen: I think the hardest part is figuring out which # to use. I have some basic ones, but I need to expand!

HK: Jen, I’ll be talking about a tool to use later for hashtag research!

Zena Thomas, PHR: on IG do you put hashtags in the message or in the comments?

HK: You can do both! If you want to crosspost your IG post to FB or Twitter, put hashtags in first comment

J. George: Question: Is there such a thing as too many hashtags? What’s a good rule of thumb?

HK: 1-3 hashtags on Twitter; 11 or more on IG. Make sure you don’t tweet just hashtags in a post!

Kourtney: What hashtags do you find most useful on Twitter??

HK: Depends on your industry/audience! What do you currently use?

Ranisha: When should I come up with my own personal one vs. using the popular ones?

HK: If you have a campaign/special offer coming up, use your own hashtag & tell your audience to use it.

Sara Levin: Should we save our hashtags until the end of the tweet or include throughout tweet?

HK: Usually better to include hashtags at end of tweet unless it won’t make sense!

Ambitionista: Q5 What are some common mistakes you see marketers make when using hashtags?

HK: Some marketers overuse hashtags or don’t do their hashtag research beforehand! Make hashtags easy to remember. Some brands also commit mistake of creating hashtag for contest & then not engaging w/that hashtag.

Ambitionista: Q6 What are the best ways to incorporate hashtags in a business social marketing strategy?

HK: First, do research on http://hashtags.org. Then create your own (short) hashtag. Encourage followers to use hashtag. MOST IMPORTANT: engage with that hashtag you create for your brand! Lead by example ๐Ÿ™‚

Ambitionista: Q7 Which brands do you see EXCELLING with hashtags? Can you give us some examples?

HK: Going to have to be biased & say that #Ambitionista has been killing it w/hashtag ๐Ÿ˜‰ Also #fireworkpeople! In terms of BIG brands doing well w/hashtags: Coca-Cola’s #MakeItHappy from this year’s SuperBowl was great!

Ambitionista: Q8 What are some websites / tools our audience could benefit from using to maximize their hashtags?

HK: As mentioned before, http://hashtags.org is great. Also, hashtagify.me is good for researching hashtags.

Ambitionista: Q9 I know there will be many unanswered Q’s with limited time. How can our community reach you?

HK: You can follow me here on Twitter & subscribe to my mailing list for awesome VIP content: http://bit.ly/HashtagitudeVIPemail

MJ: Also, what kinds of collaborations are you looking for? Do you have any events or webinars coming up?

HK: Also find out about my upcoming webinars & workshops on my mailing list. My new website isn’t up yet, hence why best to subscribe to mailing list or follow me here [on Twitter].

Sakita Holley: Great chat tonight, Helene and Mira!

Kate Kryder: This was awesome Mira and Helene! So glad we connected today!
