Should You Jump Onto the Newest Social Media Network?

A new social media network pops up in the internet world and suddenly “all” of your friends, family, co-workers, etc. are clamoring to join this network. Now the question is: should YOU also jump onto the latest, greatest craze?

Ask yourself these questions to clarify your decision:

  1. Does it make sense for me/my business?
  2. Am I truly missing out by not being a user of this network?
  3. Do I see myself avidly using this social media network alongside what I already use?
  4. What are my friends/family members/colleagues saying about this network so far?

Aside from the last question, if you answered “NO” to the other three questions, you should probably wait to join this network (or never join it at all). In the past several years, new social media networks have popped up, but not many have had true staying power. True, a few of the newer networks (Meerkat, Blab.im, ello) now have more niche following, but in terms of catching on to the mainstream, these haven’t done so compared to other networks. Especially for Meerkat and ello, I noticed there was a lot of initial hype over these two networks, but since their launches, the hype hasn’t stayed around. People are still using these two networks, but the networks have much smaller crowds compared to other networks.

Give the newer networks some time before you consider becoming an active user on them (of course, right now wouldn’t hurt for you to reserve your username on those networks just to be safe); some of these newer networks may fizzle out relatively quickly if people don’t show enough interest, though. You are better off focusing on the major social media networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest) for the time being.
